Major Investment Projects in the Development of Exports

Exports of electricity to the countries of Central and South-East Europe as a result of the restoration and modernisation of existing inter-state electrical links (Lvov and Moldova sections)

Exports of electricity per annum:

Projected investment for the second stage: 310 million dollars US.

Exports of electricity from the Unified Energy System of Russia to the countries of Central and Western Europe via the national power grids of Belarus, Ukraine and Poland

This project involves the dedication of two units of the Berezovsk hydro power station to radial operation, the construction of electric power transmission lines from Belarus to Poland and the installation of a direct current insertion at the Zesuv 750 kV substation.

Facilities to be constructed:

Volume of exports:

Projected investment:

Russia — Japan power bridge

Project goal: Exports of electricity from Russia (Sakhalin) to Japan.

Project content: Construction of the Sakhalin fossil fuel power Station 2 (Vakhrushev village) with a capacity of 4,000 MW.

Commissioning of capacity in two stages:

Transmission lines parameters: ± 600 overhead line across the island of Sakhalin (400 km), ± 500 PPT, underwater cable with a transmission capacity of 4,000 MW from the island of Sakhalin to the island of Hokkaido and the island of Honsu.

Annual volume of exports of electricity:

Provisional projection of investment to implement the project: 9,600 million dollars US.

In 1999, a preliminary feasibility study of the project was carried out by a joint working group of RAO UES of Russia and Marubeni Corporation of Japan.

East — West power bridge

Project goal: Exports of electricity from the Unified Energy System of Russia to the countries of Western Europe.

Project content: Construction of 500 kV direct current power transmission line from Russia to Belarus to Poland to Germany with six transformer substations.

Electric power transmission capacity: 2,000—4,000 MW

Length: 1,800 km

Projected investment for construction of electric power transmission line: 1,300 million dollars US.

Progress made on defining project: In 1998, a report was issued on the first stage of the project. The report was produced in co-operation with representatives of power systems and power companies in Russia, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Germany.

Russia — China power bridge

Project goal: Export of electric energy and power to China from the eastern regions of Siberia.

Project content: Construction of direct current power transmission line from the Irkutsk region (Bratsk 500 kV PP) to China with two transformer substations at the sending and receiving ends.

Annual volume of exports of electricity: 15—18 billion kWh per annum.

Provisional projection of investment for implementing the project: 1,500 million dollars US.
